What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth, often referred to as third molars, are the last of your adult set of teeth to come in. Some people’s wisdom teeth come in with no issues at all and never become an issue.
However, some people have issues with them erupting (breaking through the gum) They can become trapped beneath the gum bed, which is called impacted.
When issues arise with wisdom teeth they can be so invasive that it requires them to be removed, often called an extraction.
Why Extractions Are Sometimes Needed
When wisdom teeth become impacted, some patients just end up living with it as long as it causes no problems.
However, sometimes that impaction can cause severe pain when chewing, speaking, and other daily activities. Additional issues may include coming in crooked—often pushing the other teeth causing them to shift.
In either of these instances, the issues can lead to infection, cavities, gum disease, or other oral health complications. This is why we recommend extraction because it is the best treatment to protect against future health implications.
